You made your voice heard to help pass strong data center legislation out of the state House of Representatives. PennFuture is continuing the fight in the state Senate and we need your help.

In March, the House passed House Bill HB 1834 (HB 1834) “The Data Center Act” with bipartisan support. This critical legislation would place guardrails on data center development in Pennsylvania and help protect all of us from this extractive industry.

HB 1834, sponsored by state Representative Robert Matzie, directs the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to create regulations around how data centers are developed in Pennsylvania.

Here is what the bill does:

✅Requires large data centers to get significant portions of their electricity from new in-state clean firm energy resources and long-duration storage solutions

✅Incentivizes data centers to bring their own new, clean firm capacity to fully meet their electricity needs

✅Establishes strong new standards to ensure cleaner, tightly controlled backup power at commercial data centers

With your help, PennFuture advocated for these provisions, but we cannot stop here. The Senate must pass this legislation.

With multiple data center proposals popping up across Pennsylvania, we need to act fast to put strong environmental and energy guardrails in place. HB 1834 “The Data Center Act” is one of our first, real opportunities to do that.
