2 milligrams next to penny. US DEA: "2 milligrams of fentanyl, a lethal dose in most people".

Ryan -

First thanks for your ongoing interest in stopping Fentanyl addiction and overdoses.

Don't think directing DoD to study if they are following existing guidelines or suggesting the State Department engage with other government will make much difference. But seems like a reasonable start.

Cynically, these minor amendments seems like something you might print on campaign literature because, like motherhood and apple pie, thwarting Fentanyl deaths is a good thing.

Why am I cynical?

At the DoD, doubt another study will accomplish much but hope I am wrong. Maybe we all suspect it is "easy" and cost effective to snow and over medicate our veterans.

This sad issue will get worse from the projected budget shortfall and resource reduction at the VA. It is a fever dream to think automation, privatization, or reduction in benefits will close the budget gap and reduce Fentanyl overdoses among our brave and patriotic veterans.

As far as the State Department, the signal accomplishment of our international relations this year is to anger countries around the world. This hardly lays the ground work for improving cooperation on precursor interdiction. The State Department has made progress over the years working on this issue.

Am interested however in other ideas you have on the demand side of the equation. You do see genuinely engaged in the topic. You probably have other ideas on how to make a difference helping Americans beyond interdiction and I watch with interest to see if you bring any forward.

Enjoy your day!

John

PS The details of your work are below.

Direction to State Department to engage with foreign governments about precursors, which has been happening for some time without this amendment.
Ammendment to study opiod prescribing practices.
